Saturday, 12 June, 1999 - FULL DAY EXCURSION
Sarn Helen and Coed y Brenin |
|
Frances Llewellyn, with the valued assistance
of Peter Crew of the Snowdonia National Park, will be taking
us to the Coed y Brenin area this year to view the varied archaeology
that is presented by this area of Snowdonia.
The walk is 5 miles in distance and will be
mainly downhill after an initial easy climb from the starting
point (OS 734312) up to Sarn Helen. The finishining point will
be the Coed y Brenin visitor center (OS 716277) and we aim to
be there by no later than 5.00pm. There will be toilet and refreshment
facilities there. Along the route, we will have the opportunity
of seeing some remains of the Boer War training ground, Roman
tile kilns, Sarn Helen, the Llech Idris standing stone and the
early Christian burial ground before entering the forest - Coed
y Brenin. In there will be seen a Romano-British hut circle settlement,
a recent excavation of a medieval blast furnace and one or two
other interesting remains of bygone days.
As there will be uneven surfaces underfoot,
walking boots or stout shoes are essential plus rain or windproof
overclothes to suit the weather of the day. Please bring a picnic
lunch for the 40 minute midday stop. Binoculars will be most
useful for the first part of the walk.
The coach will pickup members (and friends)
up at Llangefni library (8.30am), Llanfairpwll Post Office (8.50am)
or Menai Bridge at Coed Cyrnol (9.00am) and we should be back
in Llangefni by 9.00pm.
A two course meal has been arranged at the
George III Hotel, Penmaenpool, for 6.00pm. The total cost for
the day will be £16.00 per person. As with previous years,
it is regretted that bookings will have to be limited to the
first 50 applying.

Saturday, 17 July, 1999 - HALF DAY EXCURSIONS
Amlwch Port Heritage Area |
|
We will be taken on a walking tour of the
old port area by the Secretary of the Amlwch Industrial Heritage
Trust - Mr. Bryan Hope. It has a fascinating history and much
is still to be seen of the remains of the old copper mining and
shipbuilding industries that once thrived here.
Meet at the cliff-top car park at 2.00pm on
the eastern side of the port - not down at the harbourside.
The car park is situated just beyond the now disused Shell terminal
building (OS 452936). We will erect AAS signposts in the 'square'
at Amlwch Port on the day. Please remember to bring waterproofs
if the weather looks threatening.

Wednesday, 1 September, 1999 - FULL DAY
EXCURSION
"Old Flintshire" |
|
Two coaches will pick up at the
usual points on the island before joining at Menai Bridge to
take us to visit the area we knew, before 1974, as Flintshire.
After morning coffee at Faenol Fawr Manor, Bodelwyddan we will
visit the Parish Church at Dyserth and then continue to the Greenfield
Valley Heritage Park at Holywell. Here we will have time for
a picnic lunch and see some of the conservation work that has
been done, including areas that had connections with Mynydd Parys,
and visit Basingwerk Abbey. Then, after a visit to Flint to see
the remains of the castle, we will follow a rural route to Kinmel
Park, an 18th century hall which also has connections with Mynydd
Parys. Finally, we repair to the White House Hotel, Rhuallt for
a meal to refresh ourselves for the journey home. Mr Vernon Hughes
RIBA, formerly an architecht with Cadw, will join us at Abergele,
to accompany us for the rest of the day and give us the benefit
of his expertise in brief talks at places visited.

Wednesday, 15 September, 1999 - HALF DAY
EXCURSION
St. Rhwydrys Church, Llanrhwydrys and Cestyll Garden, Cemlyn |
|
The present St. Rhwydryd Church dates from
the 12th century. We will meet at the church at 2.00 p.m. by
kind permission of the church authorities. Follow the A5025 road
either from Valley or Cemaes. From the Valley direction take
the second turning to the left after the Pandy Restaurant, about
2 miles after passing through the village of Llanrhuddlad. From
the Cemaes direction turn right in Tregele village. Both turnings
are signposted "Cemlyn" and will also be marked with
A.A.S. signes. From the turnings follow the A.A.S. signs for
about 2 miles along a narrow road to reach the church.
After a talk at the church we will proceed
to Cestyll garden, by kind permission of Mr. Stuart Price, Wylfa
Station Manager, Magnox Electric. The garden is essentially a
rock garden featuring a large variety of unusual plants and divided
by streams and bridges. Directions for reaching Cestyll will
be given at the church.
