There have been many changes at Holyhead since our last visit in 1997. We meet at St Cybi’s Church, by kind permission of the Rector, where Dr Ken Roberts will talk to us about his recent research and some of the changes to the town associated with development of the port and the A55 road. Afterwards there will be an opportunity, weather permitting, to view some of these developments.

Brynddu and Llanfechell Church

We meet at Brynddu where Professor and Mrs Grove-White have kindly agreed for us to visit their home. The Professor and the Rev. Emlyn Richards will be speaking about the house, some of its contents and its connections with William Bulkeley, the 18th. Century diarist. The gardens will also be open. A cuppa will be available afterwards for which there will be a charge of 50p.

After this we will proceed to the village church where the Rector, Canon Geraint Edwards will speak to us about some of its history and recent developments.  Llanfechell is signposted off the A5025 at Cemaes Bay roundabout and at the old “Sportsman” about ½ a mile beyond Rhosgoch on the road from Amlwch. Brynddu is located off a side road about ¼ mile South of Llanfechell. Field parking will be available – look out for the “AAS” signs. The various ways to get to the church from Brynddu will be explained on the day.

TO ENSURE ADEQUATE ACCESS AND CATERING PLEASE ADVISE THE ORGANISER OF YOUR INTENTION TO ATTEND BY WEDNESDAY, 23 JUNE.  NOTE THE SLIGHTLY EARLIER MEETING TIME.

Wednesday  21 July 2004 - Full day excursion
Welsh Highland Railway and Beddgelert

The excursion will be limited to 50 persons. A coach will leave from Holyhead picking up passengers at the usual places on its way to Menai Bridge – a feeder coach from Amlwch will be arranged if demand justifies one. The coach will leave Menai Bridge in time to call at the Snowdonia Park Hotel, Waunfawr for coffee before joining a Welsh Highland Railway train to Rhyd Ddu. From there the coach will take us to Beddgelert. Here we will visit the recently redecorated Church of St.Mary and hear about the ecumenical work being done there. There will be time to go for lunch at one of the cafes in the village or a picnic by the river before the coach takes us to Craflwyn. Here the  National Trust is developing a “miniature Victorian estate” as an education and accommodation centre. We shall see some of the restoration work being done on buildings and in the grounds and learn about the return of traditional farming to the Nant Gwynant area. Stout footwear is recommended for walking in the grounds. We complete the day with a meal at the Royal Sportsman Hotel, Porthmadog and should be back in Menai Bridge by 7.45 pm.

The cost will be £26.00 per person. PLEASE NOTE: a SEATING PLAN will be operated on the main coach, seats being allocated strictly in the order bookings are received.
