"Hafoty" Near Llansadwrn

This medieval house was originally a timber framed building later encased in stone, It is a unique building in North Wales. During the past two years CADW have been supervising a careful restoration by a team of craftsmen. Much of the site's history has been revealed in the process. Dr Mike Yates, CADW's Inspector of Ancient Monuments, has kindly agreed to conduct us around the property.

"Hafoty" is located at Map Reference 563782. Turn off the Pentraeth to Beaumaris road (B5109) at the junction for Llanddona, which is about 3 miles from both and will have an AAS sign. Parking locations will be indicated by more AAS signs about a mile down this road.

Saturday, 8 June, 2002 - Full Day Excursion
Gwydyr Forest - Mines, Chapel and Castle

The Wynn family were originally responsible for all of the above and the day will be spent following a trail revealing their influence on the area.

We plan to visit four mining sites - all different and in varying stages of dereliction. The ingenuity of the mining engineers of the day will become apparent as we progress from site to site as will the tenacity of the rare plants that tolerate the toxicity of the soil. On our descent to the Conwy Valley we will visit Gwydyr Uchaf Chapel, begun in 1673 and having a striking baroque style painted ceiling. The “trail” ends at Gwydyr Castle, the Wynn family home.

The walk is no more than 5 miles in easy conditions with one gradual climb from Ty Hyll. Nevertheless, stout walking shoes and weatherproof clothing are recommended and - most important - a picnic for the mid-day stop.

The coach will pick-up at Llangefni Library, Llanfairpwll Post Office and Coed Cyrnol, Menai Bridge. After a meal at "Amser Da", Llanrwst we should be back in Llangefni by 8.30pm.

The cost for the day will be £20 per person, including entry to the castle.

As usual numbers are restricted to 50  - first come .....

Pioneering excavations of the site were carried out by W O Stanley of Penrhos, the 200th anniversary of whose birth occurs this year, in the mid - 19th. century.
