Saturday, 7 July, 2001 - HALF DAY EXCURSION
Three interesting Churches in Amlwch |
|
Our first meeting is at 2pm in St Eleth Church, Dinorben
Square. Recent restoration work has adapted this church for present day
worship. Mrs Frances Llewelyn will give a brief talk on the history of the
site and on the mysterious medieval carved heads found in the tower during
the restoration work.
At the English Methodist Church, Wesley Street at 3pm Mr
John Rowlands, author of Copper Mountain, will tell us about it's
connection with the Cornish mineworkers and James Treweek, the mine agent,
on Parys Mountain.
We then visit the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea on
Bull Bay Road where a short talk will be given on the history and innovative
architecture of this modern church.
There are three "Pay and display" car parks
within about 150 yards of St Eleth and the English Methodist Church. It is
less than half a mile from the latter to the Catholic Church. Please walk
there if at all possible, leaving the limited parking places for the elderly
and infirm.

Wednesday, 25 July, 2001 - FULL DAY EXCURSION
Salford Quays and The Lowry Centre |
|
After picking up at the usual points along the A5 and meeting
a pick-up coach from the Amlwch route, one coach will depart from Menai
Bridge at 9.00 to travel along the A55 and various motorways to the site of
the erstwhile Manchester Docks, now "rejuvenated" as Salford
Quays. Development work should be complete when we visit. En-route we will
call at the St David's Park Hotel, Ewloe for morning coffee.
The coach will drop us off outside the Lowry Centre. A
cafe there can provide a snack lunch or your own picnic can be taken
outside. After lunch, take your time to look around the galleries or take a
gentle walk outside to see the site development. (An hour long guided tour
of the theatre complex can be arranged for a maximum of 15 persons at an
extra charge). At 3.00pm we board the Princess Katherine for an
hour's cruise on the canal before heading back home, calling at the Kinmel
Manor Hotel for high tea. We should be back in Menai Bridge by 8.00pm. Cost:
£28.00 per person.
